Aotearoa NZ has a low wattage climate change Minister

Ask those who are pushing the climate agenda to show just one instance of climate change outside of the normal that a citizen could verify as correct.

I'm ambivalent about the Lake Onslow project being shelved. I have followed the discussion for some time & thought it had some interesting points re creating a virtual "battery" from stored water, but lately seeing the leaps and bounds in other alternative energy such as wind (e.g. amazing photo of ONE wind machine with several turbines) and solar (including showing that you can IMPROVE some agriculture by providing shade for plants & animals under them, making bike lanes out of solar panels, window panes that hook up to batteries etc.) I began to wonder if the money wouldn't be better spent on more agile projects in terms of being able to bring on line sooner & in a variety of locations. Not much I agree with the 3-headed-beast on, but facts is facts? And I don't want to emulate the move to oppose everything just because of who says it (although it might make me question their motives, such as it is FARMERS who object to Lake Onslow? Enuf said!)

Lake Onslow (or similar) will support renewables such as wind and solar. Simeon Brown’s argument makes no sense. If we overbuild in wind and solar, then the wholesale power price will tank an every sunny, windy day. On calm nights, wind and solar are also making no money for the generation company. Wholesale power prices already drop to zero on many windy, mild nights. Hardly incentives for building lots more intermittent renewables. With Onslow, wholesale power prices should be more stable. Whenever there would be an excess of generation, the Onslow reservoir can be topped up. Excess demand? Run down that battery! The concept has a lot of merit.

I agree about the long term storage aspect of Lake Onslow - that is why I am ambivalent. BUT it is increasingly possible to store the excess power on windy & sunny days. I heard a podcast the other day about the Huntly power complex migrating to battery storage (and bio-fuel generation), and many developments I read about overseas are addressing the "intermittent" problem. Personally, when I go camping I have a portable storage battery that I can use for cooking, charging cell-ph/tablet/torches etc that is easily re-charged either partially or fully by portable solar panels, 12v cig lighter outlet while travelling, or 1hr plugged into a domestic power point. I could almost live off this at home over summer, if it had a higher storage capacity & I had a personal wind turbine!

Hi Cindy, we too have a little camper with a solar panel on the roof. It is great being able to get by without relying on a mains connection. Bring on summer :-) As you allude to, you also get a bit more in tune with matching your supply and demand. Something most of us have little incentive to do at home (aside from the hour of power and similar plans). Somewhere, not that long ago, someone did a study on how much (actual) battery storage would be required to match an Onslow scheme. Assuming current battery technologies, the cost was truly astronomical (and the resource extraction to go along with it). I am by no means an expert on the intermittency problem though, and you have prompted me to do further reading to find out what is happening at the bleeding-edge (when I get the chance!) Thanks.

It is National MP reckons overriding expert assessment such as that from the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment's office.

It does not seem that this simplistic view of the data being talked about is correct - and besides which MY data is MY data and permission should be sought from ME for it being made public. There are people who said they were anti-vax but for pragmatic reasons got vaccinated (job retention, family member who is immune compromised so decided to be alltruistic) and they could be harassed by their "friends" if their records were exposed. Just sayin'

So you’re ok with all your medical records being public information?

So by your logic, if you see me going into a dentist, that gives you a right to see my dental records? I think you’re on your own if you’re wanting individual’s medical information to be made public. Winston Peters is a populist who will hit hitch his wagon to the nearest group of outraged voters.

Awesome. Revert to the ‘woke’ phraseology whenever you can’t back your reasoning up with any substance. Have a great day.
