Thanks to all those who contribute to The Spinoff - with great journalism and with any sort of financial support. I'm staggered that just 2% (around 800 subscribers) of my fellow audience understand the value of your work and reward this with any sort of monetary consideration. I do. And I only wish I could afford to give more than my very modest annual contribution of $100. I do the same for another independent and well researched publication - The Conversation - and I note that they enjoy the support of a very similar number of financial contributors. Makes me wonder if it's the same 800 subscribers who recognise and reward value when they see it?
Thanks for all the Mahi from yourself and all your fellow journalists. While I wonder if sometimes reporting the news misses some genuine better options, and sometimes gives too much airtime to people who don't deserve it (Mike King) and that airtime often makes things worse (Seymour) I have been very saddened to watch the shrinkage of your fields. We really do need a strong media to educate, alert and challenge us, and all of you work just as hard as the rest of us in our various fields.
May you have a restful holiday break, and may the new year hold rather more pleasant surprises than this one did!
