Such a waste of time and money to progress a Bill that everyone knows in advance won't pass. Why not have an adult discussion with the coalition partners & agree to spend the money on some of the areas being cut such as the disabled community? Also not a surprise that Luxon gets his figures wrong - his resume shows someone who left everyone else to do the work & know the details, but when promoting or defending his govt decisions & policies, he needs to show he at least knows the facts they are predicated on.

'Despite that poll we mentioned at the top showing close to 50% viewed the government as detrimental to race relations, TVNZ’s political editor Maiki Sherman said it doesn’t appear to have dented support for the coalition. The latest 1News Verian poll released last night showed all three coalition parties steady, meaning they would safely return to government.'

Perhaps the disparity is because if 46% of those polled think the Government is making race relations worse, then maybe the other 54% do not think the Government is making race relations worse.

The poll showed only 10% explicitly said they think the government is reducing race tensions, though admittedly 37% said they didn't know.

Yes, I read that. But clearly the 37% who said they didn't know, along with the 7% who decline to answer, are not explicitly thinking that the Government is making race relations worse; they cannot be dismissed simply to allow you to write that 'a new poll from TVNZ ... suggested voters were worried by the coalition government’s policies on race relations.'

🙋🏾‍♀️ If they answered "don't know" that is hardly "do not think the Govt is making race relations worse"! It could go either way if forced to decide = a) probably worse but it doesn't affect me or mine directly OR b) probably not, but I don't want to be seen as racist OR c) don't take any notice of political news so genuinely don't know 🤷🏾‍♀️

You are correct, of course. The issue I point to is one of appropriation.

Notice the subhead: 'Voters believe coalition worsening race tensions'. Thus 46% of people polled becomes 'close to 50%', and that becomes 'voters', which without being qualified as 'some voters' can be interpreted to mean 'all voters except the 10%': 'a new poll from TVNZ that suggested voters were worried by the coalition government’s policies on race relations. Just 10% of respondents believed the government was reducing racial tensions in New Zealand.'

That's appropriation (and people polled are not voters; they're people polled).

Second point: 'Despite that poll we mentioned at the top showing close to 50% viewed the government as detrimental to race relations, TVNZ’s political editor Maiki Sherman said it doesn’t appear to have dented support for the coalition. The latest 1News Verian poll released last night showed all three coalition parties steady, meaning they would safely return to government.'

That need not be surprising: it's possible that the 46% bothered by race relations all disliked the government anyway, for other reasons as well; the government's support may come entirely from the other 54%, and possibly for reasons unrelated to race relations. Who knows, unless those polled are specifically asked 'Would you vote for the Government were it not for its race relations policies?'

82% of those who expressed an opinion on the matter said they believed the coalition is making race relations worse.

How does that work for you?

Cute. It reminds of the expression 'lies, damned lies, and statistics'.
