Is it the economy stupid ? Or is it us for believing all the tosh some billionaires feed us ? The economy isn’t going to hide the inequality that is growing globally much longer. The cyclists and LGBT community, environmentalists and immigrants won’t be the scapegoats for much longer.
It’s rather sad the murder of an insurance company CEO was a highlight of last year.
We need to get democracy back on track. We need independent media. Thanks for all you do. It’s about time we all got our chosen MPs in line with what we want not what their sponsors want.
Well if you cut a lot of jobs and threaten a whole lot more and send our young higher earners overseas in search of work as this govt has done, then what else would you expect, I wonder? In addition, as inequality continues to grow, fewer and fewer people can afford anything but the basics (if that) and that also means less money circulating round our communities contributing to GDP. Instead, it is being invested overseas or into empty housing around NZ and the world for the use of a very tiny number and travel a lot of the time by those with all the wealth. None of this is great for our economy.
The Finance Minister is all talk (rhetoric) but no demonstration of action to support her claims. She wants more Foreign Investment but every action she is taking reduces the likelihood that Foreign Investors would want anything to do with AO/NZ. As usual, they desperately pin everything on interest rates reducing which will free up people to spend - but that only impacts about 65% of the population (homeowners) and about half of those will only realise a reduction in fixed rates by the end of 2025. My prediction - continuing negative GDP per capita right through 2025 as sooner or later they will need to really reopen the migrant door fast to cover for all the emigrants to Australia and further afield.
Liz Truss crashed the UK economy within 30 days. I think Donald Trump will really want to beat that for crashing the US economy, and he will also want to take the world economy down at the same time. My guess is 14 days!
The murder of insurance CEOs will be followed by the elimination of some fossil fuel CEOs, as the outcomes of the California wild fires sinks in. [These climate change scenarios are documented in recent terrifying novels 'The Ministry for the Future' and 'Juice'. Is this fiction based on unacknowledged facts? Or will our history imitate this visionary fiction?]

Well, I may be very poor, but my landlord just got a huge bail-out from the government, even though they didn't need one.
So let's all be happy about that.

No one’s got any money so why would we spend it. That’s why consumer spending is muted. Everyone’s in a lull period waiting …
